Crochet thread is used for fine, heirloom quality projects, such as lace doilies, mandalas, filet crochet art, and jewelry. The numbering system for thread size and ply is different if the fiber content of the yarn is plant fiber or animal fiber. For plant fibers, such as cotton, linen, and bamboo, the first number represents the thread size and the second number is the number of plies in the yarn. For animal fibers, such as alpaca or Merino wool, it's the opposite—the first number is the number of plies in the yarn and the second number is the thread size.
